A Mounted 17th Century Folk Art Brass Bassinoire Cover from France

This pierced brass decorative element from France was originally the cover of a bassinoire from the 1600s. A bassinoire is a device where hot coals are inserted into a vented receptacle which is passed under sheets, warming a bed before use. These metal vessels would have been affixed to a long pole, allowing a person to use them without fear of burning themselves on the coals.

Our bassinoire cover has a amazing vert de gris patine due to the fact that the previous owner used it as a decorative accessory outside. This piece is beautifully decorated in a wonderful folk art way. In the center you see a head en profil around this you see several birds and baroque fruit .

Beautiful weathered confit jar with a gorgeous green glaze. With green glaze they are extremely rare. Confit jars were used primarily in the South of France for the preservation of meats such as duck or goose for dishes such as cassoulet or foie gras. The bottom halves were left unglazed, due to the fact that the pots were half buried in the ground to keep the contents cooler and fresh.
